Based in San Diego, architect Douglas Austin is the founder and CEO of AVRP Studios. Through his company, Douglas Austin has played a pivotal role in the development of affordable housing in San Diego, including working on projects with YIGBY.
Yes In God’s Back Yard (YIGBY) is an action-based nonprofit collective of cross-sector professionals joining together to address the housing crisis in San Diego. The organization works with faith communities that wish to use surplus lands to develop more affordable housing.
To help achieve these goals, YIGBY has focused on innovative approaches to housing, including modular housing. Modular houses are constructed off-site in manufacturing facilities. These houses can be constructed in about half the time of traditional houses, without any compromise in the quality of construction. Additionally, as the state of California is able to approve of all units at the manufacturing facility, the construction process is even quicker. Modular houses are also mostly disaster-proof and made from existing shipping containers, which reduces waste. Ultimately, modular houses can cut costs by up to 20 percent.
YIGBY works with faith community leaders to facilitate the financing and development of housing, including modular housing, on their properties. To learn more about this organization, visit www.yigby.org.
